In 1944 the archeologist Vladimiro Rosado Ojeda starts exploration work that would lead to discovery under a mound of a temple in the chanal.

El Chanal was a wealthy Indian city composed innumerable monuments (tombs, palaces, fortifications) which now lie buried among many mounds of all sizes and extending along both banks of the Rio Colima and is very likely to be as discussed in the capital of the Kingdom of Coliman celebrity.

Exploration work in that area Archaeological had to wait some years until the arrival in the 80’s of the archaeologist Maria de los Angeles Olay Barrientos, which continued with exploration.

Archaeologist Maria Barrientos Olay located the rise and splendor of the site between 1100 and 1400 AD, the total lies in approximately 140 acres to the margins of Rio Colima The Origin of the Name: The Chanal, has to do with imaginary beings, like elves living in rivers and streams known as «Chanos» under the many representations of the God of Rain – TLALOC – which exist in the region.
