The predecessor of Teatro Hidalgo, was a small wooden theater made by the present street September 16 at number 75, which had the name «The Mexican flag.»

It was during the interim government of Mr. Colonel Don Francisco Santa Cruz (December 10, 1869 to September 15, 1871) when he thought of the need to build a theater worthy of the city, right on the spot where now stands.

Construction of the theater began in 1871 under the direction of master architect Don Lucio Uribe, with unfinished construction even began to present works of companies coming to Colima, the above to obtain funds and complete its construction, was given the name at the time of Teatro Hidalgo, Decree of 1883 he was removed to give it the name of «Teatro Santa Cruz» was until 1914 when again I return the name of «Teatro Miguel Hidalgo».
